The 5 educational models that make up our teaching style

Choosing a school for your child is a daunting task. And with so many great options on the table, making the right choice for your family can feel overwhelming. At Woodbury Boston, we teach the Western Australian Curriculum, of course — but there are lots of ways we adapt our teaching to create the best possible learning environment for your child.

Millennial parents are on the ball

Our 41 years of educating students means we’ve interacted with lots of parents. And our favourite thing about this generation of parents — you’re incredibly on the ball! In fact, you’re easily the most informed cohort of parents to have navigated the school system. And we love it.

Curious and keen to make the best possible choice, you’re looking to understand which type of school might best suit your child. The old priorities of ‘reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic still matter, of course — but social and emotional development, cultivating resilience, and inclusivity are top of mind for most new parents as they choose a school.

The Woodbury Boston difference

As mentioned, all our pedagogy at WBPS is based on the Western Australian Curriculum. But our rejection of outdated teaching methods is what sets us apart from mainstream schools. On top of that, we don’t align ourselves with large-style, standarised tests.

Our students participate in NAPLAN — but more for the experience than anything else. That’s because we know that test pressure can make students feel disenchanted, disconnected, and disempowered. Not only that, standardised tests can become a source of distraction for our students.

A varied approach

Instead of relying on traditional approaches to education, we’re looking to reimagine school from the ground up. To do this, we borrow aspects from several proven approaches:

Montessori: this popular style of teaching ensures that your child is an active participant in learning. In the Montessori style, we place a shared focus on your child’s acquisition of academic, life skills, and social-emotional development.

Frobel: based on the overarching idea that childhood is valid in itself (not just as a preparation for adulthood), Frobelian principles emphasise the importance of play for children. And we agree wholeheartedly.

We firmly believe that play-based learning helps children develop their understanding of the world through direct experience with it. And that’s why play is such a huge part of every day at Woodbury Boston — from Kindy-Year 6.

Steiner: Our school is located in a beautiful environment and — similar to the Steiner model — we work to nurture your child individually and facilitate connections to the natural environment. This also creates connection among our students and to the wider world.

Throughout their schooling at WBPS, your child will have countless opportunities for creative, self-directed play. Each of these opportunities helps develop creativity, critical thinking, and imagination.

Reggio Emelia: in-depth, interest-led projects are proven to foster collaboration and boost your child’s cognitive development. We believe that every moment is a learning experience. That enthusiasm for growth brings learning to life for your child.

Gardner: the father of the theory of Multiple Intelligences, Gardner knew that there is no ‘one way’ to be smart. We put this theory into action by celebrating a range of intelligences — not just the ones that make your child good at writing or maths. This helps them child develop their overall strengths and become a well-rounded person.

Vygotsky: Developmental Psychologist, Lev Vygotsky, was all about the social aspects of education. His Sociocultural Theory relies strongly on the idea that community plays an important role in “making meaning”. And we couldn’t agree more.

At Woodbury Boston, our students play in mixed-age groups. We relate strongly with Vygotsky’s research into the importance of peers in the development of cultural beliefs, values, and problem solving strategies.

With this in mind, we cultivate a sense of ethos and leadership in our students from day one. And our fortnightly Parliament sessions help your child understand the democratic process and learn that their voice matters.

Meeting children where they are

Woodbury Boston’s unique mix of proven educational models makes our school a very special place. We meet your child where they are — which allows them to develop a love of learning. Our fun, inclusive curriculum helps develop critical thinking skills, personal pride, and a sense of meaning in your child. And our positive, supportive school culture helps them get the best out of every day.

If you’d like to learn more about our school community, why not book a tour? It’s a great way to get a feel for the place. Our Year Six students will show you and your child the ropes and our Principal, Nick, will answer any questions you have.
